The Galápagos Archipelago is a magical place, a time capsule in which nature shows us how it works, and how species adapt to their environment. A place that is never indifferent to the visitor.
The Archipelago is made up of 13 major islands, 17 small ones and more than 40 rocks. It covers an area of 3.100 square miles and it is situated 600 miles from mainland Ecuador.
Its discovery, as so often happens in history, was an accident: in 1535, the bishop of Panama Fray Tomás de Berlanga, was on his way by boat to Peru when in a deviation from its course, these islands were discovered, that finding would begin to appear since then in the navigation maps as “The Islands of the Turtles” (and hence the Galapagos) or “Enchanted Islands”, due to the incredible richness in flora and fauna that could be found there. This led to some scientific expeditions to visit the islands, being the most famous the one that took place in the middle of the eighteenth century by the ship Beagle, (with the British scientist Charles Darwin aboard) After two weeks of observations and collecting data, plus a deep research, Darwin created his evolution theory in his book “The Origin of Species”.
Such a special place could not be unnoticed to international agencies. Therefore, in 1979 the Galapagos were recognized as Natural Patrimony of Humanity.
Nowadays, the islands are being protected by the Galapagos National Park. There are 42 sites that have been categorised for their visit.
If you ever plan to visit a living laboratory, or if you are interested in the evolution, natural history and conservation, then you do not want to miss this magical corner of Ecuador, which concentrates the greatest biodiversity on Earth.
